Auburn players share opinions on Warriors-Cavs; look who made multiple preseason magazine covers

Auburn football-Kamryn Pettway-Auburn Tigers

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily War Eagle Wakeup, a rundown of everything happening in Auburn football and Auburn Tigers athletics. Today, we discuss Auburn players tweeting about the NBA Finals, preseason magazine covers, Bruce Pearl’s optimism and a potential commitment coming soon.

Warriors vs. Cavaliers

Are you Team Curry/Durant or Team LeBron/Kyrie?

Some Auburn football players were having some good-natured (we think) fun late Monday night during Game 5 of the NBA Finals. (Spoiler alert: If you didn’t make it to the ending, the Warriors finished off the Cavs.)

Defensive back Javaris Davis and receiver Darius Slayton had a little back-and-forth going that played out like this:

Others chimed in with their opinions on the matchup and outcome:

Until next NBA season …

Cover boy

Summer’s here and so are the preseason magazines, which are starting to hit the newsstands and land in your mailbox.

Auburn running back Kamryn Pettway got his — after all, he’s on the cover. Several covers. After Pettway rushed for 1,224 yards and 7 touchdowns last season, Street & Smith’s, Athlon and Lindy’s figured it made sense to place him on their regional cover.

Good choice, guys.

All in the family?

If you listen to SEC Country’s Ben Wolk, Auburn is close to adding a 2018 receiver commitment whose name carries a lot of weight with the program. Shedrick Jackson is the nephew of Bo Jackson, but he’s set on making a name for himself in college. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Jackson attended Big Cat weekend and told Wolk that he’s probably within a couple of weeks from making a decision.

His take on his last visit? “A lot of great vibes. I talked to the coaches also. It was great times,” he told SEC Country.

Does that mean Jackson also will be a Tiger like his uncle? We’ll have to wait and see. The Birmingham (Ala.) Hoover High star’s 247Sports crystal ball leans heavily toward Auburn.

Great expectations

When Bruce Pearl speaks, he doesn’t mince words. In Huntsville, Ala., on Monday night, he told the Auburn club that his 2017-18 squad will be, well, better.

“This will be the best team I’ve had at Auburn,” he said.

His three teams at Auburn have gone 15-20, 11-20 and 18-14. That’s progress. His top four scorers from last season are all back for their sophomore seasons — Mustapha Heron, Danjel Purifoy, Jared Harper and Austin Wiley. Plus, 6-4 forward Desean Murray is eligible after sitting out last season following his transfer from Presbyterian where he averaged 20.2 points and 7.4 rebounds as a sophomore.

Linebacker U?

Takeo Spikes, Karlos Dansby, Kurt Crain, Gregg Carr, Zeke Smith, Aundray Bruce, Quentin Riggins … the list goes on and on.

If you could pick three Auburn linebackers for your team of all-time Tiger greats, which ones would you take? SEC Country’s Justin Ferguson has rolled out a daily position-by-position poll to determine just that since last week. On Monday it was linebackers. Later Tuesday, you can vote for the best defensive backs. You still can vote for QB, RB, WR/TE, OL and DL in case you missed any of those the first time through.
