Gamecocks’ team goals

South Carolina coach Will Muschamp on what the Gamecocks are focusing on in preseason camp and for the upcoming season:

“Team goals are taking care of the ball offensively and getting the ball off people defensively,” he told the media. “Get explosive plays offensively and take away the explosives on defensive.”

Finding balance

It’s cliché, but Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper are looking for balance out of the Gamecocks’ offense in 2017.

“In a perfect world, we’d love to be balanced,” Muschamp said. “As a defensive coach, it’s hard to face offenses who have equal ability to run it and throw it.”

Offensive line gets a boost

Junior right tackle Zack Bailey is expecting stability under center (quarterback Jake Bentley) to boost the offensive line’s play, wrote Heath Cline for Gridiron Now.

The Gamecocks, under new offensive line coach Eric Wolford, are looking to improve from their SEC-worst 41 sacks surrendered last season.

Dax Hollifield hears from the Gamecocks

Four-star inside linebacker Dax Hollifield heard Muschamp loud and clear after his message to linebacker recruits on Sunday afternoon.

“He texted me right after that and said, ‘That one’s for you.’ That’s their message right now is: Come here if you want to play early,” Hollifield told Matt Connolly of The State.

Aaron Nesmith planning an official visit

According to Phil Kornblut of SportsTalk, 3-star small forward and Charleston, S.C., native Aaron Nesmith is close to taking an official visit to South Carolina.

Bruce Ellington is back on the market

Former South Carolina wide receiver Bruce Ellington was waived by the New York Jets on Saturday following a failed physical.

A fourth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2014 NFL Draft, Ellington was cut by the 49ers on Aug. 3 before being claimed by the Jets.
