Former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas wins 2017 PGA Championship

Justin Thomas had quite a day on Sunday as he picked up his first career major, winning the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C..

Thomas, who entered the day at 5 under par, fired a 3-under 68 to finish the tournament at 8 under, 2 shots clear of a number of golfers such as Patrick Reed and Louis Oosthuizen. After beginning the round bogey, birdie, bogey, Thomas finished the final 15 holes at 4 under par, including 3 birdies on the back nine.

It’s been a career year for the former Alabama golfer, as he recorded his best finish at the Masters and the U.S. Open. At Alabama, he won the Haskins Award, which goes to the top collegiate golfer, and was a member of Alabama’s 2013 national championship team. Thomas is from Goshen, Ky., just outside of Louisville.

He becomes the third different first-time major winner this year, joining Sergio Garcia, who won the Masters, and Brooks Koepka, who won the U.S. Open. Jordan Spieth claimed the British Open.

After finishing his round, Thomas celebrated with his friends Spieth and Rickie Fowler.
