GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators’ slide continued this week with a 19-17 home loss to Texas A&M on Saturday.
With the loss, the Gators (3-3, 3-2 SEC) dropped two spots to No. 8 in the latest SEC Country Power Poll, just behind Kentucky and just ahead of South Carolina.
At the start of the fourth quarter, it looked like the Gators would be able to pull out the win. Florida held a 17-10 lead following a 6-yard rushing touchdown from Dre Massey.
But then Texas A&M scored field goals on three consecutive drives and picked off Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks with less than a minute left to seal the game.
“It hurt,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said after the game. “The crowd was awesome, did an unbelievable job. Our guys played hard. Our guys played hard. … I’ll tell you what, they left it all out there.”
The Gators now head into their bye week before their annual matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville on Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS.
“It’s hard to have a loss going into a bye week, yet we have an opportunity to work some things this week in practice,” McElwain said. “We’ll get some good work in getting ready for Georgia. I believe in these guys. I believe in this team and I will continue to do that and we’ll continue to push and get a little bit better. We’ve got a lot of ball ahead of us. A lot of good teams. Just going to go take care of business.”
SEC Country’s Power Poll, consisting of 25 voters, unanimously placed Alabama in the No. 1 spot, where the Crimson Tide have been all season.
