BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — If you want to see Alabama coach Nick Saban smile, just mention the success of one of his former players.

That happened Monday during Saban’s appearance at the Monday Morning Quarterback Club in Birmingham.

Former Alabama safety Eddie Jackson, who is now a star for the Chicago Bears, set an NFL record on Sunday with two defensive touchdowns of 75 or more yards.

Jackson returned a fumble for a touchdown and took an interception from Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton back to the endzone. Saban didn’t see the plays on television, but he did notice the alert flashing on his ticker at the bottom of the screen. A smiling Saban said he was happy for Jackson.

“That’s the kind of plays Eddie always seems to make,” Saban said. “I was really, really happy for him. But I guess we had quite a few guys — O.J. (Howard) and some other guys. Dont’a (Hightower) played well, I guess. Heard a lot of positive things about a lot of our players in the NFL yesterday.”

Jackson’s final season at Alabama was cut short after he broke his leg on a punt return against Texas A&M. Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of Jackson’s injury.
