2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Mississippi State is ranked (Week 9)

Mississippi State went to College Station on Saturday and demolished Texas A&M, looking like the Bulldogs that started the season 3-0 with a 30-point win against LSU.

Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another as the Bulldogs (6-2) led 14-0 at the half and 21-0 in the third quarter before the Aggies found the end zone. Even then, MSU didn’t let up. Nick Gibson scored on a 14-yard run and Jamal Peters returned an interception 90 yards to put the game out of reach.

“We had a great game plan going in,” Fitzgerald said after the game. “We knew if we could move them up front and we could run the ball, that’s what we were going to do. Obviously, it worked out for us.”

Mississippi State gained 228 yards on the ground and Fitzgerald led the team with 105, including a 2-yard scoring run for the first points of the game Saturday.

The win moved the Bulldogs up one spot to No. 5 in this week’s SEC Country Power Poll. The xx voters still kept Mississippi State behind LSU — the Bulldogs beat the Tigers 37-7 on Sept. 16 — but the gap is just x votes.

The Bulldogs step out of conference this week with a home game against UMass before taking on a three-game run of SEC matchups to the end the regular season. First, the Bulldogs meet top-ranked Alabama on Nov. 11 at home, followed by a Nov. 18 trip to play Arkansas before the regular-season finale against Ole Miss on Thursday, Nov. 23.
