Alabama athletics-Crimson Tide athletics

Junior pitcher Courtney Gettins threw a no-hitter in her University of Alabama debut as the Crimson Tide softball team swept its first two games at the Sand Dollar Classic in Golf Shores, Ala., on Friday.

Gettins threw the no-hitter during a 13-0 victory against Lamar. She walked two and struck out one in the five-inning game.

Earlier Friday, freshman Madison Preston (1-0) threw a one-hitter in her first appearance with the Crimson Tide, during a 10-0 victory against Penn State. After the Nittany Lions were able to load the bases in the first, she finished with two walks and two strikeouts while needing 78 pitches to get through the five innings.

Gettins (1-0) threw 66 pitches. Combined with the shutout thrown by senior ace Alexis Osorio on Thursday night, Alabama (3-0) has yet to yield a run this season.

After scoring just one run at South Alabama on Thursday, Alabama tallied a combined 23 runs on 18 hits.

Sophomore first baseman Bailey Hemphill went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Gabby Callaway also had four RBIs, three of which came on a bases-clearing triple against Penn State. Junior outfielder Merris Schroder scored three times and drove in three runs, including an inside-the-park home run against the Cardinals.

Update: Saturday’s games against Virginia Tech and Florida A&M were cancelled due to inclement weather. Alabama will play in the Black and Gold Tournament, hosted by Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss., beginning Friday.

Friday’s Penn State game summary was not available.
